It lives downstream, where it feeds on the fruit of an aquatic plant. It climbs waterfalls to travel upstream, then lays eggs and excretes the seeds of the plant. In high intensity currents, the plant grows as a highly branching, asexual morph, providing protection for the fish's eggs. Because of its highly branching nature, the branches of the plant easily break off and travel downstream. Once downstream, the plant grows into its sexual morph, which produces fruit for the fish to eat and disperse.
